Sokyu Genyu
 
Sokyu Genyu (1956-) was born in Fukushima. He is a Zen Buddhist monk of the Rinzai sect as well as an author. In 2000, his novel Mizu no Hesaki (The Prow in the Water) was published in the literary magazine Shincho, and was nominated for the Akutagawa prize. In the following year, he won the Akutagawa prize with Chuin no Hana (Flowers in Limbo). He writes life and death, or spirit world from a Buddhist monk's point of view. He also writes numerous essays on Buddhism and Zen.
