Wolfgang Schlecht was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1950. He is currently a professor at Waseda University, where he teaches German language, comparative literature, and translation theory. He has rendered into German a wide array of fiction, including Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen, Keizo Hino's Garage with a Skylight, and Taeko Tomioka's Marriage, among other works.
