Verena Nakamura-Methfessel studied Japanese language and literature at the University of Frankfurt, and her Magister (MA)-thesis deals with the work of the Japanese-Korean author Yangji Lee, focusing on her award-winning novel Yuhi. Currently she is researching her dissertation on the subject of Japanese-Korean literature, concentrating on the texts of Yan Sogiru.
