The 8th JLPP International Translation Competition Award Ceremony and Commemorative Symposium: BUNGAKU DAYS 2024 SPRING
- The Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, has announced the Grand Prize winner and the two Second Prize winners of the 8th JLPP International Translation Competition. We are happy to hold the award ceremony and commemorative symposium, "BUNGAKU DAYS 2024 SPRING," on Sunday, March 10, 2024. The winners, judges, a novelist, and an editor from an overseas publisher will join the Award Ceremony and the Symposium in person and discuss the translation of Japanese literature from various perspectives. Please come and join us!

Award Ceremony of the 8th JLPP International Translation Competition
For the 8th Competition, we called for entries for the source text, “Watashi wa samishikatta” by Fujino Kaori. After a rigorous judging process, we selected one Grand Prize winner and two Second Prize winners for the English category in January 2024. This year, we are delighted to hold an in-person award ceremony with the winners and members of the judging committee visiting Japan.

Prize Winners
Grand Prize
- Rebecca Ann Gade
- Born in the United States in 1989. Graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with Honors in English and Asian (Japanese) Studies. She came to Japan in 2015 and worked as the Assistant Language Teacher for the JET program in Kesennuma and Sendai until 2022. She is the First Place Winner of the 19th annual JAT Contest for New and Aspiring Translators (2023). Currently works as an in-house translator.
Second Prize
- Jo Lumley
- Born in the United Kingdom in 1983. Graduated with Honors from the Department of East Asian Studies, Durham University. Earned an M.A. in Japanese linguistics from the Graduate Schools of Letters, Osaka University, and a Ph.D. in Linguistics and Language Acquisition from the School of Modern Languages, Newcastle University, and is currently a Teaching Associate in Japanese Language at the School of East Asian Studies, University of Sheffield.
Second Prize
- Lisa Wilcut
- Born in 1967 in the United States. Earned M.A. in East Asian Studies (concentration in Japanese literature, culture, and religion) from Stanford University and M.A. in Philosophy from San Francisco State University. She writes and translates short fiction, essays, and poetry; edits books in English about Japan; and teaches at an American university in Japan. Her other activities include serving as an interviewer with professionals in Japanese literature and culture.
