Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927) was born in Tokyo. While studying at Tokyo Imperial University (present the University of Tokyo), he started writing. One of his short stories Hana (The Nose) was highly praised by Soseki Natsume. Then he published many masterpieces from stories based on Konjaku Monogatari, such as Rashomon, Imogayu (Yam Gruel), and Yabu no Naka (In a Bamboo Groove) to Toshishun, which he made a Chinese short romantic story to a nursery tale. In 1926, he moved to Fujisawa, Kanagawa to rest, as he was suffering from a nervous breakdown and insomnia. In the following year, he committed suicide by poisoning because he felt ‘vague anxiety for his future.'
