Naoya Shiga
 
Naoya Shiga (1883-1971) was born in Miyagi and brought up in Tokyo with his grandparents. After dropping out Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo), he published his first novel Aru Asa (One Morning) in 1908. In 1910, he began publishing the literary journal Shirakaba (White Birch) together with other novelists, such as Saneastu Mushanokoji and Takeo Arishima. In 1949, he received the Order of Culture.
